Drumming for Health & Healing

Drumming has been found as a suitable and effective way of healing both physical and psychological ailments. Recent research suggests that the benefits of drumming have positive effects in the treatment of physical conditions, mental illness and personality disorders. It is also an ideal therapy for drug addiction recovery.

Many people suffer from psychological ailments that influence their general perception and reactions to events or situations. These ailments such as stress, depression, addiction and anxiety are end results of negative responses to the way we evaluate our past and present experiences. Common symptoms of negative responses are feelings of isolation, lack of confidence and competition, unhappiness, addiction, violence, to mention a few.

Drumming has the capacity to release negative feelings and the ability to induce a greater state of inner peace. Drumming and other rhythmic auditory stimulation impose a driving pattern on the brain, particularly in the theta and alpha ranges (the positive and productive mental states). In these ranges, strongly coherent brain-wave patterns that synchronize the frontal areas of the brain with ascending discharges are released. These discharges enhance psychological and physiological well being through physiological relaxation; also facilitating physiological processes; reducing tension and anxiety.

Today drumming is being used in many parts to the world as an alternative therapy for numerous psychological and physical problems. Afriquetone aims to introduce more individuals, hospitals, special homes and health care practitioners to the positive effects of drumming on health. Drumming workshops used for therapy are more effective when spread over a given time frame. For example, 1 or 2 days a week for 8 to 10 weeks, or less depending on your choice.

Drumming produces an altered state of consciousness and an experience of a rush of energy from the vibrations, with physical stimulation producing emotional release and a relaxed state of mind. It provides the forum for self-expression and it teaches how to rebuild emotional health and addresses issues of violence and conflict through expression and integration of emotions. Drumming helps you express unhealthy emotional reactions, which are often suppressed by drugs, causing addiction. Also, drumming alleviates self-centeredness, alienation and violence. It builds respect, participation, connection with oneself and others, awareness, concentration, confidence, talent, coordination and leaves you a happier person.

Testimonials

"At the beginning of the session it was clear who they were from the group dynamics.

By the end of the drumming they had become part of the group with no effort having to be made on anyones part to assimilate them. "
